Black Friday 2026: dates and a no-regret shopping plan
Key dates: Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026, so Black Friday is November 27 and Cyber Monday is November 30. Many stores start "early Black Friday" sales weeks earlier, so the real shopping season starts now.
Step 1: Make the list before the ads arrive
Write down what you actually need and a top price for each item. A list protects you from impulse "deals" on things you weren't planning to buy.
Step 2: Start tracking prices in October
Set price alerts now with a tracker such as Keepa. If an item drops to a low in early November, you'll know it's a real low and not a markdown from a raised price. Our guide Is that sale real? explains how to read a price history.
Step 3: Watch out for "was" price games
Federal guidance says a comparison to a former price should reflect a price the item was really sold at for a reasonable period (FTC Guides Against Deceptive Pricing (16 CFR Part 233)). If a "was" price looks too high, check the history.
Step 4: Understand return and price-adjustment windows
Many retailers extend holiday return windows into January, and some will refund the difference if their own price drops. Read each store's current policy (for example, Target's Price Match Guarantee) and save your receipts.
Step 5: Stack savings the legal way
- Store coupon or promo code
- Cash-back portal or card-linked offer
- Gift card bought at a discount from the same store
Never pay with a gift card someone asks you to buy for them, and never share gift card numbers. Those requests are a common scam.
